On Sunday 18th December 2016, as part of a carol service in Leigh Church, the Community Choir gave the first public performance of The Holly and the Ivy, a carol written in 1993 by George Balcombe (1927-2015). We were also able to make a private recording so that the composer's relatives were able to hear it. As well as being an amateur composer and arranger who made an arrangement for wind decet of Saint-Saens' The Carnival of the Animals, George Balcombe was also a notable architect, who worked on Oscar Niemeyer's Brasilia and became one of Canada's youngest professors of architecture.
